I assume you mean electronic self-publishing versus traditional publishing company. If not disregard this answer. Electronic Self-Publishing Pros. -You publish what you want on your schedule. You won't ever get turned down because that published released a book too similar to yours. -More artistic control. -Success or failure is entirely on you. -Much, much easier to accomplish. You don't have to prove the value of your book to 2-5 other people before t let you publish. -No need for an agent. (Though having one to help you learn the ropes of how to sell your book probably isn't a terrible idea) -You keep a higher percentage of your sales. (As much as 70% as opposed to 10-12%) -Easy to do. Once your book is written and edited you can format it, put it on KDP, and have it selling within 48 hours. Cons. -More artistic control means you have to do a lot more. Design a cover and hire an editor for starters. Yes, you need an editor and a good cover. No, your friend who likes to read and make memes isn't a choice for either. A lot of e-published authors skip these step- Some of them still sell books, I'd bet most of them don't. Regardless, cutting corners here shows. -Success or failure are on you. You have nobody backing you. Publishers don't do much to push the sales for 90% of their authors besides putting the books on a shelf. That being said, you won't even get that much help as an indie writer unless you have some awesome friends and good connections. -There are a lot of other books on the market. Some self-published writers will tell you that doesn't matter. T're wrong. You have to make your book stand out in both quality and visibility. (In that order if you want to do it right) -Stigma. Some people, usually other people in the writing business, might assume that you indie published because you couldn't get published via the traditional route. Doesn't really matter unless you have thin skin. The only opinions that matter are your readers and yours- Remember that. --- I fall on the electronic self-publishing side. I don't feel that writers need publishers as much anymore. We can now cut the middleman and get out content directly to the our audience without having to jump through hoops. Don't think it's the easy way out though. Self-Publishing is going to mean a lot more leg work.
